00:00 | rangi | pretty good, short conference, just a one day one but pretty good |
00:00 | its always hard to know libraries move so slow
00:00 | dcook | Mmm very true |
00:01 | I had a chat to a librarian about that on Friday actually. She was saying how it's taken a year to even get to the point of deciding to maybe make a decision
00:01 | wizzyrea | the seeds you planted will sprout in a few months/years |
00:02 | rangi | *nod* |
00:02 | ive had ones take 6
00:02 | years | |
00:02 | thats the longest :)
00:02 | dcook | Wow... |
00:03 | Well, as wizzyrea has said, it will happen eventually :)
00:04 | Hmm, I just had a thought
00:05 | I've been thinking about proposing some sort of online class to UBC relating to Koha, programming, open source, etc (even though I don't have the time to teach), but...maybe some sort of online workshop would be better
00:05 | Maybe just something where I show people how they can edit templates and then maybe some back-end scripts. Just to whet their appetites...
00:05 | rangi | koustabha wanted to start that |
00:05 | academy.koha-community.org
00:06 | basically we could run up a moodle
00:06 | and then it just needs content, content is where it fell down
00:06 | dcook | Hmm, that page isn't coming up |
00:06 | Hmm, what kind of content?
00:06 | rangi | yep, i turned it off again there was no content |
00:06 | workshops | |
00:06 | tests | |
00:06 | dcook | ahh |
00:06 | rangi | etc |
00:06 | dcook | Tutorials? |
00:06 | rangi | yup |
00:06 | * dcook | loves this idea |
00:07 | rangi | it does need someone to set it up/ populate/maintain etc |
00:07 | and that someone cant be me :)
00:07 | but i can totally point a domain at it :)
00:07 | dcook | Ideally, I would love something like TryRuby (http://tryruby.org/levels/1/challenges/0), but I'm not sure how that would work |
00:08 | You are only one person after all ;)
00:09 | Hmm, I'll keep this in mind. I keep trying to figure out ways to get other people involved in Koha. Even if it's not something they use long-term, I think it'll help a lot of people, especially library students and librarians break out of the concept that they have to be consumers rather than producers
00:09 | wizzyrea | ^^ a noble goal |
00:10 | dcook | Thanks, wizzyrea :) |
00:11 | I suppose I was thinking about an online class, because then folks could get academic credit for it, which helps with the whole "how am I supposed to learn anything when I'm already bombarded by classes, future job angst, paying my rent, etc etc"
00:11 | rangi | you could totally have librarians writing tutorials/tests |
00:11 | yep moodle is designed precisely to do that
00:11 | online classes | |
00:11 | wizzyrea | it's like the foss version of blackboard |
00:11 | dcook | writing tutorials/tests? |
00:11 | wizzyrea | but cooler cuz it's foss |
00:11 | dcook | Mmm, I've heard of a few people using it |
00:11 | wizzyrea | tons of folks use moodle. |
00:12 | heaps | |
00:12 | dcook | Right, it's the PHP one |
00:12 | * dcook | thinks he has seen something about integrating moodle and koha on the community site |
00:12 | rangi | yep that would be good too |
00:12 | then you can catalogue your course :)
00:13 | wizzyrea | or link directly to catalogue resources |
00:13 | or place a hold from moodle.
00:13 | that would be cool.
00:13 | kinda like course reserves
00:14 | dcook | Mmm, I didn't realize that Catalyst supported moodle as well |
00:14 | rangi | yup |
00:14 | dcook | You folks do all sorts |
00:14 | wizzyrea | ^.^ |
00:15 | dcook | Bug 3511 Looks like Cait was thinking similar thoughts recently |
00:15 | huginn | 04Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=3511 enhancement, P5 - low, ---, gmcharlt, ASSIGNED , Integration with Moodle |
00:15 | bgkriegel | Hi all. We use moodle extensively at the university (doing a revision of class right now). I could setup a site, that's the easy part. The content... it's more difficult. |
00:16 | dcook | hey bgkriegel. Yeah, I'm trying to think of the content. Or rather...fun content :p |
00:16 | bgkriegel | :) |
00:17 | dcook | To be honest, I've never been a big fan of Blackboard so I'm not even sure what Moodle can do |
00:17 | rangi | moodle is only like blackboard in that they are both learning management systems |
00:17 | dcook | hehe |
00:17 | rangi | blackboard sux, moodle doesnt |
00:17 | dcook | Good to know ;) |
00:18 | I suppose the content would just be instructions rather than interactive content, right?
00:18 | rangi | it can be either |
00:18 | dcook | I suppose if it was set up like BibLibre's sandboxes.. |
00:19 | wizzyrea | ?! why wouldn't people just get an account and go at their own speed? |
00:19 | * wizzyrea | might be missing something |
00:19 | dcook | I'm thinking about developing Koha rather than using Koha |
00:19 | rangi | you can do all sorts of courses |
00:20 | wizzyrea | no, that doesn't change my confusion. |
00:20 | :) | |
00:20 | dcook | hehe |
00:20 | I'm just wondering how you get multiple people to edit Koha at their own speed
00:20 | rangi | dcook: first course |
00:20 | set up a dev koha instance
00:21 | wizzyrea | install koha / gitify |
00:21 | ^ this | |
00:21 | dcook | Which is exactly what I was thinking in th e shower the other day... |
00:21 | wizzyrea | i mean, first course. |
00:21 | dcook | It really must be monday |
00:21 | The dev koha instance that is
00:21 | Gitify? | |
00:22 | wizzyrea | (it's still in it's infancy but - https://github.com/mkfifo/koha-gitify) |
00:23 | takes a package install and turns it into a developer instance using a git clone
00:25 | dcook | Hmmm. I'll give it a whirl. |
00:25 | wizzyrea | do report any bugs you find. :P |
00:26 | dcook | I finally updated my Debian VM over the weekend, but it's just on my older laptop, so I need to pickup a decent machine to give me a bit more power |
00:27 | I know we already have some docos for package installs and git installs, but...I want to go through the processes again and try to make them as user-friendly as possible
00:27 | Well, not user-friendly...as explicit and easy to understand as possible
00:28 | cjh | dcook: I have done some work on this recently |
00:29 | dcook | Oh? How do you mean, cjh? |
00:29 | cjh | dcook: for the Catalyst open source academy I made some instructions for installing koha, making it a dev install, making a simple fix, git basics and the upstreaming it |
00:30 | I was planning to go through them at some point and possibly move them to the koha community wiki
00:30 | dcook | Oooh. Very cool, cjh! |
00:31 | If I went through it sometime, would you like some feedback about it?
00:31 | papa joined #koha
00:32 | cjh | ill message you dcook :) |
00:32 | dcook | Awesome, thanks, cjh :) |
00:45 | * dcook | plots away on how to bring Koha to the world |
00:45 | dcook | Perhaps Canada first as a pilot ;) |
00:45 | eythian | too late, it's already in most of the world :) |
00:45 | dcook | Touché :p |
00:46 | Then I'll plot to bring the world to Koha ;)
00:46 | eythian | that'll work :) |
00:46 | dcook | My home province has 306 libraries |
00:46 | I think all or most of them are part of a consortium now, but I think it's awefully expensive
00:47 | 306 public libraries*
00:47 | They have the resources where they could be running (and developing) Koha.
00:47 | * dcook | thinks that rangi mentioned that PEI is using Koha for all its public libraries...no, all its school libraries |
00:48 | rangi | yep school |
00:49 | http://www.gov.pe.ca/index.php[…]7681&dept=&lang=E
00:53 | wizzyrea | what's funny is that lots of koha libraries do this thing where they take the license fees they are saving, and instead of using that money to say, fix up things that bug them about koha, they buy books and expect people to fix their issues in koha for free :(. That's not universally true, of course but often so. |
00:53 | because they misunderstand the meaning of the word "Free" in "free software"
00:55 | dcook | :( |
00:57 | wizzyrea | certainly, if libraries put even a quarter of the extra money they were saving back into Koha, we could do some really kickass stuff. |
01:30 | jcamins | Could someone please do a pull on master and run updatedatabase? |
01:32 | I can't switch at the moment because I'm working on something else,and I can't tell if there's a syntax error.
01:32 | bgkriegel | jcamins: done, but what's the problem |
01:33 | jcamins | bgkriegel: it died abruptly for me with no error reported. |
01:34 | bgkriegel | is there an update? |
01:35 | last log in file is "3dc0f57 Bug 9767: Fix for updatedatabase.pl (mixed version numbers)"
01:35 | huginn | 04Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=9767 critical, P5 - low, ---, m.de.rooy, Pushed to Master , Fix for updatedatabase.pl (mixed version numbers) |
01:35 | jcamins | That's the last patch I had too. |
01:35 | Thanks. | |
01:35 | bgkriegel | ok |
01:35 | jcamins | Must've been something specific to this test server. |
01:36 | That is good. :) | |
01:38 | wizzyrea | I'm doing 23 -> 25 right now |
01:38 | but it seems to work fine
01:59 | dcook | What do folks think about adding some Javascript to "doc-head-close" to disable submit buttons when they're clicked? |
02:00 | I've heard from people getting duplicate patrons from double-clicking on the patron entry submit
02:00 | rangi | how about a hand to clip impatient ppl about the head? |
02:00 | id pay for that :) | |
02:00 | jcamins | rangi: I like that idea. |
02:00 | dcook | That would be a lot of hands, rangi ;) |
02:01 | wizzyrea | dcook there's a jquery function |
02:01 | preventdoubleformsubmit
02:01 | rangi | dcook: i dont really like the idea, however if you made it do a loading with a circle thingy instead |
02:01 | wizzyrea | or somesuch |
02:01 | rangi | so they can see something is happening |
02:01 | wizzyrea | that should prevent that |
02:01 | rangi | or they will just refresh |
02:02 | ie i think the problem is they dont think something is happening, so hit submit again
02:02 | wizzyrea | right, prevent double form submit should take care of that |
02:02 | it's in use all over the place
02:02 | rangi | it does a loading popup? |
02:02 | wizzyrea | naw, but it prevents double form submits |
02:02 | rangi | yeah, see that just annoys me |
02:02 | wizzyrea | if you double click only the first goes through |
02:02 | rangi | thats a hack to not solve the problem |
02:03 | the problem is they are not seeing they have done something
02:03 | dcook | Well, my thought was you disable the button and change the value to "Submitting" or something like that |
02:03 | So, both ideas | |
02:03 | Prevent double-clicking, while also showing that something is happening
02:04 | wizzyrea | this may be a personal taste thing - I kind of hate that, but I've learned where to look to verify that I've done something. Users not so much. |
02:04 | so sure, turn it into a submit button.
02:04 | rangi | its gonna get worse |
02:05 | more and more ppl browse with the url bar hidden
02:05 | specially on mobile devices
02:05 | wizzyrea | i mean change the button into something |
02:05 | else | |
02:05 | you could probably add that to the doubleformsubmit function, then it would apply everywhere that's in use
02:06 | dcook | It doesn't seem very prevalent when I grep it |
02:06 | opac-reserve.tt
02:06 | request.tt | |
02:06 | wizzyrea | it's only been put in places where people have reported double submits causing problems |
02:06 | dcook | Mmm |
02:06 | wizzyrea | but it's included on ever page in the intranet |
02:06 | every* | |
02:06 | because it's in an include.
02:06 | you can use it anywhere.
02:07 | it's in use in fines too
02:07 | dcook | Ah, I might be looking at an old branch |
02:07 | Irma joined #koha
02:07 | dcook | What are your thoughts rangi on disabling and changing the value? |
02:08 | Perhaps not as elegant as a circle thingy, but...
02:08 | rangi | as long as its obvious they have clicked it |
02:08 | dcook | The only issue with that, wizzyrea, is that a person would need to change every instance :/ |
02:08 | rangi | so they don't file a bug, i filled in the form but couldnt hit submit |
02:08 | cos you know they will
02:08 | wizzyrea | it's an include? you should only need to update it once? |
02:09 | maybe I"m not following you.
02:09 | dcook | I mean you need to reference the function in regards to each form |
02:09 | Rather than just targetting all submit buttons
02:10 | I suppose you might not always have a "submit" button per se though..
02:10 | rangi: That's true. I like the idea of the circle...I want to say that's in use for the framework import/export...
02:11 | Huh... | |
02:11 | Apparently the login screen/submit button already has it in place
02:11 | lol | |
02:12 | Except my login failed and now I can't re-submit without refreshing the page
02:12 | rangi | yup yup |
02:12 | dcook | or...wtf... |
02:12 | eythian | it should probably be a class you add to buttons that you want it on |
02:12 | wizzyrea | bootstrap might have one |
02:13 | also might have that kind of thing built in - I haven't looked
02:13 | dcook | Yeah, I was just thinking that, wizzyrea |
02:13 | Except that I just updated my db before applying that mixed version number patch..
02:13 | And now can't even get into the dev instance..
02:14 | Ahh | |
02:14 | My mistake it appears..
02:14 | * dcook | shuts up and goes about fixing it |
02:18 | eythian | http://rc.getbootstrap.com/css/ <-- hope we're using bootstrap 3 :) |
02:20 | jcamins | eythian: Bootstrap 3 does not appear to have been released? |
02:20 | eythian | no, I think it's still rc. |
02:21 | drop the /css off that URL and you can download it.
02:22 | dcook | wizzyrea: I'm not noticing that preventdoubleselect in fines O_o |
02:23 | wizzyrea | preventdoubleformsubmit |
02:23 | oh, and you know why
02:23 | dcook | mhm |
02:23 | wizzyrea | because it hasn't been pushed yet |
02:23 | dcook | Ahh |
02:23 | That could do it | |
02:23 | wizzyrea | it just got through qa yesterday |
02:23 | sorry, I thought that was in ages ago, it's been outstanding for a while
02:24 | dcook | Hmm |
02:25 | I'm not sure if it works or not..
02:27 | Yeah...I don't know if that function actually works
02:27 | * dcook | just put 11 holds on the same item on the master staff client |
02:27 | wizzyrea | it was working the last time I checked it |
02:28 | dcook | Hmm, my bad |
02:29 | jcamins | See? Someone else was able to do that! |
02:29 | dcook | I was using a modded script |
02:29 | But I see what rangi was saying
02:29 | jcamins: ? | |
02:30 | jcamins | dcook: I have regularly ended up with multiple holds on a single item. |
02:30 | dcook | Intriguing |
02:30 | jcamins | But I've never noticed it when it happened, just afterwards when something wonky happened to my holds. |
02:30 | dcook | When I tried again using the master version, it didn't happen |
02:30 | I did it through request.pl though
02:30 | eythian | it really needs, at the least, a last-ditch "I'm not going to do something silly like that" test. |
02:30 | wizzyrea | jcamins that would be fixed in 3.8 |
02:31 | * dcook | agrees with eythian |
02:31 | dcook | Should probably have server-side validation I would think |
02:32 | * jcamins | is generally pro-validation. |
02:32 | * dcook | too |
02:32 | jcamins | Don't bring quote 123 into play unless someone really wants it. |
02:33 | dcook | hehe |
02:35 | Grrr. Can't can't the css to refresh on my dev..
02:35 | wizzyrea | I don't think there is a situation in existence where a person would want multiple, identical holds. |
02:35 | jcamins | wizzyrea: agreed. |
02:35 | dcook | Oh, there might be, but they probably shouldn't be allowed to |
02:35 | eythian | wizzyrea: what happens if you want the book, and then want it again, huh? |
02:35 | bet you didn't think of that!
02:35 | dcook | hehe |
02:36 | I imagine there are lots of patrons who would love to do that
02:36 | * wizzyrea | gets out the biggest trout in her collection... winds up.... |
02:36 | wizzyrea | actually it doesn't work like that |
02:36 | the way it works, is when you complete one you complete them all :P
02:36 | if you are talking about the reserves that are submitted with mad clicking.
02:36 | though I havne't tested that since we've gotten the reservenumber in there
02:37 | that may not be true anymore
02:37 | which is even more reason to not let people do that
02:42 | jcamins | wizzyrea: except if you fill one hold don't you fill them all anyway? |
02:42 | eythian | wahanui: goatstep is http://youtu.be/1eCbGrMfQ-g |
02:42 | wahanui | OK, eythian. |
02:42 | wizzyrea | i haven't tested it since we put in the reservenumber, making each reserve unique. |
02:42 | jcamins | No, it's transfers that are fill one, fill all. |
02:43 | wizzyrea | right, reserves used to be that way too |
02:43 | completing one reserve (if there were multiple identical ones) would complete all of the identical ones
02:43 | but yes, transfers currently if you complete one, in certain circumstances, you complete them all
02:45 | dcook: bug 8054 was the bug for fines
02:45 | huginn | 04Bug http://bugs.koha-community.org[…]w_bug.cgi?id=8054 normal, P5 - low, ---, liz, Passed QA , can hit submit twice when paying fines |
02:45 | wizzyrea | was/is |
02:46 | ^^ that one created some big messes.
02:47 | patrons + money + mad clicking = recipe for mad patrons
02:47 | dcook | Mmm, no doubt |
02:47 | I suppose I could just report a bug for the patron entry/edit screen...
02:47 | Although now I'm thinking about what rangi said, lol
02:47 | wizzyrea | /mad/angry/ |
02:47 | dcook | Because it really doesn't seem like anything is happening |
02:48 | "or not happening"
02:48 | wizzyrea | pdfs could use some feedback, for sure |
03:01 | Oak joined #koha | |
03:02 | wizzyrea | is there in existence an "easy marc framework" |
03:02 | dcook | http://henrik.nyh.se/2008/07/j[…]ouble-submission/ |
03:02 | Good points | |
03:02 | Not with that name?
03:03 | wizzyrea | i'm just thinking that perhaps we should ship koha with a so-called "easy" framework that used english words |
03:03 | not library words.
03:03 | dcook | Mmm, I've thought about that before too |
03:03 | I've actually mentioned to people before that they can rename frameworks to be less imposing
03:04 | So it might make sense to have a user-friendly framework for non-MARC folk
03:04 | wizzyrea | yea, i mean it should be completely, utterly possible to do this |
03:04 | just a lot of frackin work.
03:04 | :/ | |
03:04 | not that I mind work...
03:04 | dcook | Depending on how big the easy framework is |
03:04 | wizzyrea | I'm thinking small - like |
03:04 | dcook | Could probably use the AACR2 minimal cataloguing level as a guide |
03:05 | wizzyrea | hm. Yes I like that idea at least it follows some sort of standard. |
03:05 | then just take the words and make them normal words.
03:05 | dcook | Mhm |
03:06 | wizzyrea | http://lts.library.cornell.edu/lts/pp/cat/22mlc |
03:06 | dcook | https://www.oclc.org/bibformat[…]necataloging.html |
03:06 | wizzyrea | I like that, it's less than 20 fields. |
03:06 | dcook | Mmm, yours is niccer |
03:07 | nicer* | |
03:07 | Ohh, yeah, that looks quite good
03:07 | It could probably even be tightened a bit
03:07 | wizzyrea | *nod* |
03:07 | I'd leave the isbn and issn
03:07 | for covers | |
03:07 | dcook | Mhm |
03:07 | wizzyrea | drop LC call |
03:08 | edition is good, imprint could go
03:08 | physical description could go
03:08 | no 500's there tho
03:08 | dcook | Hmm |
03:08 | wizzyrea | and no 800's for url's |
03:08 | dcook | I used to do a lot of minimal level cataloguing, and we used imprint and physical description |
03:08 | wizzyrea | (some people like to put, say, youtube links to movie trailers in the catalog) |
03:09 | * jcamins | just got a bark from nagios informing him that his server is down. |
03:09 | wizzyrea | oops |
03:09 | jcamins | What is notable about this is that the server is actually up. |
03:09 | wizzyrea | but it can't be because you are stil lon IRC |
03:09 | :) | |
03:09 | FOR NOW. | |
03:09 | jcamins | In marked contrast to its situation every evening at this time for the last three weeks. |
03:09 | Different server.
03:10 | dcook | :o |
03:10 | wizzyrea | oh. oh well. |
03:10 | jcamins | I think nagios was just anticipating. |
03:10 | dcook | lol |
03:10 | jcamins | Which is kind of bizarre, really. |
03:12 | wizzyrea | @wunder nzwn |
03:12 | huginn | wizzyrea: The current temperature in Wellington, New Zealand is 17.0°C (4:00 PM NZDT on March 11, 2013). Conditions: Mostly Cloudy. Humidity: 88%. Dew Point: 15.0°C. Pressure: 30.18 in 1022 hPa (Steady). |
03:13 | wizzyrea | ^ is more what I expected from summer |
03:13 | dcook | @wunder sydney, australia |
03:13 | huginn | dcook: The current temperature in Sydney, New South Wales is 27.0°C (2:00 PM EST on March 11, 2013). Conditions: Scattered Clouds. Humidity: 51%. Dew Point: 16.0°C. Pressure: 30.09 in 1019 hPa (Falling). |
03:13 | dcook | Oh my... |
03:13 | wizzyrea | oh, that's decently nice! |

17:20 | let's say I have 300 items checked out (random number I know but think big) and they have all been renewed to their max
17:21 | if I have allowrenewal overide set to allow. and I go back and renew all 300
17:21 | does that mean I have to deal with the yellow pop-up dialog 300 times - or just once
17:21 | (hopefully that makes sense) :P
17:22 | jcamins | bag: I haven't tried it, but I think the dialog will appear only once. |
17:22 | bag | w00t |
17:22 | :D | |
17:22 | jcamins | I'm not sure if it will list all 300 books or just one of them, though. |
17:22 | bag | I thought that too |
17:22 | jcamins | Definitely a good idea to check, though. |
17:22 | bag | well I might as well test - but I'm not testing 300 :P |
17:23 | jcamins | You could just test five. |
17:23 | bag | I was thinking 2 :P |
17:23 | HA | |
17:23 | alexanderd | Hi all! I have just a simple question... Could I? |
17:23 | bag | of course :) |
17:27 | alexanderd | I was searching a SQL query to erase all records, clean koha database |
17:28 | bag | what do you mean clean database? |
17:28 | you want to get rid of everything in there?
17:28 | alexanderd | (Koha 3.10.02.000) |
17:28 | yes, all records (not everything else)
17:29 | bag | I'd first make a backup - mysqldump |
17:29 | alexanderd | another usefulls SQL querys could be one to backup Global system preferences setup |
17:29 | bag | records - you could truncate biblios, biblioitems, and items |
17:30 | but then that would not clear your indexes (you'd have to add at least one record back in and then reindex)
17:30 | and there are also old_bilbios and so on
17:30 | schema? | |
17:30 | wahanui | schema is tracked in git. or found at http://schema.koha-community.org |
17:30 | bag | you may want to look at that |
17:31 | if you want to back up system preferences - that would be a mysqldump of just that table

18:44 | I mean lost connection to server
18:46 | jcamins | jlozano: only when there is a problem with the internet connection. |
18:47 | magnuse | oleonard: briefly :-) |
18:48 | oleonard | No big deal magnuse, I was just curious if you had any idea what was going on with Bug 9772 |

18:51 | jcamins | jlozano: all I said was that it's almost certainly not a Koha issue that caused the connection to fail. |
18:51 | jlozano | ok, great! |
18:51 | jcamins | The only time I have the connection interrupted is when there's a problem with the internet connection. |
18:52 | jlozano | well, it only happens after I try to add a book. And I've tried 2 different koha installations on different servers. |
18:52 | but I guess they always originate from the same place... hmm.
18:52 | jcamins | Sounds like a local problem. |
18:52 | Possibly your browser.
18:52 | You should always use a modern version of a real browser.

18:53 | yeah, I'll try outside the network.
18:53 | jcamins | Very odd. My diagnosis would be a misconfigured proxy server on your LAN. |

19:20 | jlozano | jcamins: thanks so much for your assessment. I RDP'd into my computer at home and was able to catalog the books no problem. must be some blocking here at school. |
19:33 | jcamins | jlozano: if I had to guess, I'd say the most likely thing they're blocking is POST requests greater than a certain size. |
19:33 | Or they have routing screwed up and your IP is getting changed.
19:36 | jlozano | they always be getting the routing screwed up! |
19:36 | jcamins | jlozano: if it's happened before, then that's definitely the most likely. |
19:38 | jlozano | well, it always happens when I try to add the book through circulation, system operates perfectly otherwise. |
19:39 | jcamins | jlozano: I mean, if they've had problems with routing in the past, it's probably routing now. |
19:46 | jlozano | I'm guessing it's deliveritely blocking some kinds of traffic. |
19:47 | jcamins | jlozano: that would be my guess as well. If you have an IT department, you could ask them if there are restrictions on "POST" requests, and if they could please lift them. |
