16:24 mbalmer it is remarkably easy to access Koha data from third party applications, using a MySQL client library..
16:26 jcamins mbalmer: of course. But editing that data is probably not such a good idea.
16:26 mbalmer works like a charm.
16:27 but I wouldn't be to much surprised if Koha doesn't get locking right.
16:28 jcamins Probably not. There are lots of places we should use transactions but don't.
16:29 mbalmer yeah, Koha is "prayware" ;)
16:30 jcamins Fortunately unless you do something dumb like editing data outside of Koha you have pretty good chances.
16:31 mbalmer well, I do such dumb things, and it works surprisingly well (but I am only touching the fees, no circulation data or so)
16:32 jcamins If you don't use partial payments, the accountslines table is probably basically transaction-safe.
16:32 Of course, if you are editing things outside of Koha, when someone actually fixes accountlines you'll be high and dry.
16:34 mbalmer the db should allow concurrent connections.
16:34 jcamins Yeah.
16:34 I mean when the database schema changes.
16:34 It won't be part of the QA process to make sure that your non-Koha program is adjusted to work with the new schema.
16:35 mbalmer well, of course I have to track what's going on and adapt my stuff accordingly...
16:35 that is my job, certainly not QAs job
16:35 jcamins The place where editing the database from outside of Koha gets really problematic is biblio and biblioitems.
16:36 mbalmer but that is the core of Koha, where Koha is the best application to deal with that data.
16:36 jcamins Right.
16:36 That's usually what people are talking about when they say they edited the database from outside Koha, though.
16:36 It always ends in tears. ;)
16:37 mbalmer I am more into payment systems, sth Koha is not good at...
16:38 if I had to get at circulation stuff etc, I'd rather use the SIP protocol
16:42 jcamins Yeah, that'd be my recommendation.
16:43 mbalmer: incidentally, I learned that Evergreen uses Postgres directly for searching their catalogs.
16:43 Thought you might be interested in seeing how it worked.
16:43 :)
16:44 mbalmer I am loosely following evergreen.  But then I have my marc21 datatype in PostgreSQL, which allows me to do fancy things as well.

16:57 * jcamins doesn't.
16:57 jcamins Why?
16:58 libsysguy i think I discovered a loophole
16:58 jcamins You know that Overdrive is broken by the current SIP?
16:58 libsysguy haha no I didn't
16:58 * libsysguy hates SIP
16:58 jcamins Yeah, the current SIP server works with self checkout machines in France but not Overdrive.
16:59 libsysguy I wanted to see if anybody else had noticed that if you turn off the WiFi on your Kindle that you could keep the book as long as your want
16:59 but I was curious if that book came back as available on overdrive
17:00 jcamins lol
17:00 libsysguy we were having a debate about if over breakfast
17:01 maybe I could ask liz or owen
17:01 jcamins Yes, that's definitely something I'd want to discuss over a Sunday morning brunch.
17:01 Yeah, they both use Overdrive.
17:01 libsysguy I guess I'll wait till monday

20:53 cait I was suggesting mentioning kohacon somewhere :) but not sure where it would fit in

20:53 I have a place for it
20:57 added
20:57 cait cool :)
20:58 eythian OK, think I'm going to turn things off and let them cool down a bit.
20:59 rangi good idea
20:59 cait hope it charges after cooling down
21:00 eythian I think it will, it's running a lot of things at the moment, which isn't ideal in a hot room.

23:15 rangi yup

23:17 Shane-S k thanks, ID made me think it was a #
23:17 however I have the borrower and card the same
23:18 I did that to save time, our Student System assigns unique numbers, so figure they can match :)
23:20 rangi: if a patron type code of "K" for kid has a minimum age of 5, but I have no date of birth, will that fail?
23:21 rangi dunno, only one way to find out
23:22 Shane-S yeah, almost ready for an import I am messing with the card creator atm :P
