02:36 | bencahill | hey guys...currently my server is a p4 2.5 with 1GB ram and a 40GB ide drive, running koha with ~2k biblios/items. What should I be looking for upgrading..mainly a fast cpu, or fast hdd (or ssd) raid..etc? |
02:36 | jcamins_away | bencahill: CPU and RAM. |
02:37 | bencahill: faster HDD + RAID would be a good idea, but chances are your bottleneck is CPU and RAM.
02:37 | bencahill | jcamins_away: my thoughts as well... |
02:37 | jcamins_away: so I could probably just get a pair of 250GB 7200RPM drives and put them in a raid1, and that would be plenty for my disk needs?
02:37 | jcamins_away | Usually it's RAM, but P4 2.5 is kinda old. |
02:38 | bencahill: I would think so.
02:38 | bencahill | jcamins_away: yeah, right now pageloads are on the order of 4-8 seconds, mostly 100% cpu |
02:38 | jcamins | A modern CPU should fix that. |
02:38 | What sort of load do you have?
02:38 | bencahill | jcamins: would 4GB of RAM be plenty, or might I want more? |
02:39 | jcamins | And anticipate. |
02:39 | Depends on the size of your library.
02:39 | bencahill | jcamins: only one person at a time in the library, checking in and out books |
02:39 | jcamins | How many records? |
02:39 | bencahill | jcamins: as time goes on, more people may use the OPAC, but I doubt it would be any more than 2 or 3 at a time |
02:39 | ~2k biblios and items
02:40 | jcamins | Oh, 1GB would actually be enough for that. |
02:40 | Mind you, 4GB would be a heck of a lot better.
02:40 | bencahill | jcamins: yeah, that's kinda what I thought :P |
02:40 | jcamins: considering ram is pretty cheap though...
02:41 | jcamins | Yeah, that's what I was going to say. You can get 4GB for $50 or something like that. It's a small investment for a great deal of room for expansion. |
02:41 | bencahill | right now backup sql.gz's are 6.2M |
02:41 | jcamins: right, so a small raid1, and 4GB of ram, and then spend the rest on a fast cpu?
02:41 | I'm assuming koha can utilize multi-core processors well?
02:43 | trea left #koha | |
02:43 | jcamins | Heh. |
02:43 | I don't think it even needs to be a *fast* CPU.
02:43 | Just a modern one.
02:43 | I easily run much heavier systems on a VM on my Intel Core 2 Duo laptop.
02:44 | Well, kind of. | |
02:44 | Since it's CGI, if you have multiple requests at once, they'll run on different cores.
02:44 | If you only have one request, there's nothing particularly multithreaded.
02:44 | (though I suppose MySQL could use one core and Apache the other)
02:44 | bencahill | jcamins: how much faster do you think an athlon64 x2 5000+ (dual-core 2.8) would be than a p4 2.5? |
02:45 | jcamins: oh, so if I was going for more speed on single-user loads, I'd want to get higher clock/bus/cache than cores?
02:46 | jcamins | Well, according to cpubenchmark.net, the P4 has a score of 304, and the Athlon a score of 1344. |
02:46 | bencahill | jcamins: do you trust those generally? I like that as well for having a nice spreadsheet :P |
02:47 | jcamins | I don't think clock/bus/cache makes that much of a difference, really. |
02:47 | I mean, it does, but I think you need really big changes for it to make a difference.
02:47 | I think as ballpark estimates, cpubenchmark.net probably offers value.
02:47 | bencahill | jcamins: right, but neither would cores if your application is not multithreaded :-/ |
02:48 | jcamins | bencahill: right, I'd probably just save the money. |
02:49 | bencahill | jcamins: okay...(this is for our church, so right now I need to get a ballpark figure for upgrading...I'm thinking 300-400 USD) |
02:49 | jcamins | Go with a dual-core system, so that MySQL and Apache each have their own core. |
02:49 | bencahill | jcamins: yeah, so like a modern athlon or i3 dual-core... |
02:51 | jcamins | Right. |
02:51 | That's what I'd do.
02:51 | $300-400 seems perfectly reasonable.
02:51 | Heck, you could probably get a prebuilt system in that range that would do what you need.
02:52 | bencahill | jcamins: good point, I hadn't thought of that...would save time :-P |
02:52 | jcamins | Right. |
02:52 | bencahill | jcamins: what companies do stuff like that (without junk like monitor, video card, etc.)? |
02:53 | jcamins | Hm. |
02:53 | * jcamins | doesn't even know anymore. |
02:53 | bencahill | hehe |
02:54 | ...not that building is a problem, I quite enjoy it...but yeah, if I could get one prebuilt, that would be faster
02:54 | I'll look around and see if I see anything I like
02:56 | jcamins | newegg? |
02:57 | * bencahill | has 6 newegg tabs open currently :P |
02:57 | bencahill | although just looking at parts right now... |
02:57 | and yeah, stuff is cheap :P
02:58 | jcamins | Amazing, isn't it? |
02:59 | bencahill | it seems like the amd cpu's are still cheaper for the same performance... |
02:59 | jcamins: and nice :)
02:59 | * bencahill | sits on his old athlon64 single-core 1.8, purring along happily :) |
03:00 | bencahill | newegg doesn't really have anything in the way of amd dual-core :-/ |
03:04 | actually looking at more like $25 for 4GB ram...and not looking at off-brands, more like crucial, kingston
03:06 | whoa, hdd prices really have skyrocketed, though...got a couple of tb drives last year for $50-60 each, now cheapest 250GB on newegg is $80 o.0 ...may skip the raid :P
03:06 | jcamins | Yikes. |
03:06 | Might be a good idea.
03:07 | bencahill | yeah, I think due to flooding in japan this past summer/fall |
03:07 | my brother in server/db administration mentioned it last year, said they had tripled in price
03:11 | jcamins: I suppuse for something like this, a 400W psu would be plenty, right?
03:12 | jcamins | I would think. |
03:14 | bencahill | I think the computer we built here is something like that...and it has three hdd's and a graphics card :P |
03:16 | jcamins | That should be plenty. |

14:51 | libsysguy | well if you were also thinking about your patch I didn't get a chance to finish |
14:51 | * jcamins | is now thinking about you for two reasons. |
14:51 | jcamins | You shouldn't have reminded me. :P |
14:51 | libsysguy | what CSS and jQuery |
14:51 | jcamins | On catalog.uttyler.edu. |
14:52 | libsysguy | did I hide it? |
14:52 | jcamins | No, I thought I recalled you posting it on a wiki somewhere. |
14:52 | libsysguy | ohhh no I didn't |
14:52 | jcamins | Ah. |
14:52 | libsysguy | would you like me to? |
14:52 | jcamins | Please! |

14:53 | sorry jcamins | |
14:53 | jcamins | Thanks. :) |
14:53 | libsysguy | is there a theme secion in the wiki |
14:53 | jcamins | Not yet. |
14:53 | There should be, though.
14:54 | libsysguy | maybe I should create it and put it there |

15:27 | chris_n | yup, I like the "sculpted" look |
15:28 | * jcamins | has decided to not care about IE for right now. |
15:29 | chris_n | that's generally a good attitude to take toward IE |
15:31 | * jcamins | considers colors. |
15:36 | cait | :) |
15:36 | I didn't sneak away!
15:40 | libsysguy | noooo don't round the corners with CSS |
15:40 | unless you don't care about IE users
15:40 | then by all means…ROUND ALL THE CORNERS
15:40 | * libsysguy | comes back from his…*ehem* morning activities |
15:41 | * jcamins | probably should care about IE users. |
15:41 | doesn't, really.
15:41 | * libsysguy | wishes I didn't have to |
15:41 | * jcamins | decides to see what it looks like in IE. |
15:41 | libsysguy | it just doesn't do them |
15:41 | in 7 or 8 | |
15:41 | not sure about 9 | |
15:42 | but I don't think it does them there either
15:43 | jcamins | Hm. |
15:43 | It doesn't even do the background properly.
15:43 | This shouldn't be that hard.
15:43 | libsysguy | well IE rarely does anything correctly |
15:43 | jcamins | The background is *black*. |
15:43 | libsysguy | what does your CSS look like to set it? |
15:44 | jcamins | background: black; |
15:44 | * libsysguy | has battled with IE before |
15:44 | jcamins | Here's the problem. |
15:44 | There's an ms-linear-gradient in the stylesheet.
15:44 | libsysguy | ahh |
15:44 | jcamins | And apparently order of loading has no relevance to IE. |
15:45 | libsysguy | what version? |
15:45 | jcamins | Maybe I should do a gradient. |
15:45 | 8. | |
15:45 | libsysguy | hmm…it was 7 that generally had the gradient issues |
15:45 | at least we don't have to support 6 anymore
15:45 | jcamins | Well, I don't want any gradient at all. |
15:46 | libsysguy | oh…I thought thats what you were doing |
15:46 | oops | |
15:46 | jcamins | No, I'm thinking of adding a gradient because apparently gradients take precedence over non-gradient backgrounds. |
15:46 | libsysguy | so the background:black comes after the gradient and its still applying |
15:46 | jcamins | Right. |
15:46 | libsysguy | 0_0 |
15:47 | can you do a background:none; then background:black;?
15:47 | like a reset... | |
15:47 | jcamins | Hm. |
15:48 | No luck. | |
15:48 | libsysguy | c.r.a.p. |
15:48 | jcamins | Well, I'll fiddle with IE more after I've gotten it looking nice in every other intelligent browser. |
15:48 | libsysguy | haha |
15:48 | jcamins | Well, every intelligent browser. |
15:49 | No "other" about it.
15:49 | libsysguy | thats probably the most frustrating part…you get it working in all the "other" browsers then try and fix it in IE, and break all the other browsers |
15:49 | scumbag IE | |
